On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump becomes 45th President of the United States.
This result was a shock to most political experts and pollsters.
Indeed Hilary Clinton, the Democratic candidate, was favorite in the polls.
So why this election can be considered like the most controversial election for many years ?
In the first place - Who is Donald Trump ?
Donald John Trump was born and raised in the Queens of New York City in 1946.
In 1971, he took control of his family's construction firm which was renamed The Trump Organization.
During his career, Trump has built and managed lot of office towers, hotels and casino to become one of the most powerful businessmen of USA.
In 2003, he became the executive producer of the reality show The Apprentice, in which a group of competitors battled for a job in the Trump Organization.
On June 16, 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for President of the United States.
Program
About Immigration
He wants to build an impenetrable physical wall between USA and Mexico.
In the aim of establish new immigration controls to prioritize the jobs, wages and security of the American people. Of course, he said Mexico will pay for this wall.
About Economy
He wants create a dynamic booming economy that will create 25 million new jobs over the next decade.
About National Defense
He wants increase the size of the U.S. Army to 540,000 active duty soldiers, in the aim to have the most powerful army in the world.
Foreign Policy
Establish good relationship with Russia of Vladimir Poutine.
And, bring trade cases against China.
Results
Despite this controversial program, on November 8, 2016, Donald Trump won presidential election.
Hillary Clinton actually got more votes than Donald Trump, but because of the electoral system, he won the presidency. Indeed, we can see that Hillary Clinton had 1.300.000 more votes than Trump.
This is because of how the US electoral system works. In theory, it could be possible to win a US presidential election with less than 30% of the popular vote.
Clinton has become the fifth US presidential candidate to finish ahead of her rival in the popular vote, but to still lose the election overall.
Reactions
A shock for European countries.
- France: "The victory of Trump opens a period of uncertainty."
- Germany: "A huge shock."
>> Despite this result, the European countries want continue to deal with the USA.
European extreme right leaders congratulate Trump.
- Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban: "Great news, democracy is still alive."
- In France, Marine Le Pen: "Congratulations. You have delivered a courageous campaign."
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent Donald Trump a telegram of congratulations and hoped for a "constructive dialogue" with him. The Russian Parliament welcomed this victory by applause.
Bad news for Mexico. Twelve million Mexicans live in the United States, more than half of them are clandestine.
