Hello everyone, today I am going to explain to you what love is with the documents we have seen in class.

Love is a great feeling for human beings.

When you meet someone, love can be love at first sight. Psychologists from the University of Gronigen in the Netherlands are trying to find out whether love at first sight really exists or not. To find out, they interviewed hundreds of people, showed them photos of other people and asked them to rate their physical attraction. This experiment concluded that love at first sight is just a strong physical attraction. To be sure, they also organized small meetings of twenty minutes with participants and only thirty-two have already felt the love at first sight.

Love can also seem impossible, take the example of Romeo and Juliet, a great love story written by William Shakespeare, their love is impossible because Romeo is a Montague and Juliet a Capulet who are two rival families. Juliet loves him so much that she talks about him when he is away and Romeo is so in love that he infiltrates the Capulets. However this love is a tragedy as they both die. In this story love is tragic and impossible.

Love is also different according to social class

Today, two people from different social classes can get married. In the past it was complicated. For example, in the play "The Importance of Being Ernest" written by Oscar Wilde in 1895. In this play, Jack wants to marry Gwendolen, so Mr Worthing has to go to his mother Lady Bracknell's house. Jack is from the upper middle class. Lady Bracknell is part of the upper social class with her house, her outfit, her servants, her maids. She wants to interview Mr Worthing to see if he is a good match for her daughter. She asks him many questions such as: does he smoke, how old is he, how much does he earn, etc. In this case love is also complex because if the mother is not convinced he does not marry. Moreover, Gwendolen does not marry Mr. Worhting for love, she marries him for his false name; Ernest. In the end Mr. Worthing is not accepted by Lady Bracknell because of his answers, so love is not easy if the social classes are different.

For another example of love with social classes we can take "A shameful affair" by Kate Chopin. Kate Chopin's story is about the beginning of the love between Mildred, a young woman from the upper class, and a farmhand. Mildred meets the farmhand who is sinning. At first we see the difference in social classes between the two people. This difference makes it difficult for them to communicate and to get closer to each other. The farmhand looks like a predator waiting for his prey and Mildred is dead on the hook. After that she tries physical approaches with him, the farmhand teaches her to fish. At one point the closeness was strong and the knave has a sexual attraction to Mildred, he will escape because in his social class, which must be religious, the act must be performed after marriage. In short, the social class of the knave prevented love from being built between the two.

To conclude, love seems very complicated, one can die from it like Romeo and Juliet, not be able to match expectations like Mr Worthing or not conclude in front of social classes like Mildred. To define love, love is a deep feeling but it is different depending on the person.
