I am going to talk about the notion the Idea of Progress

First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion : the Idea of Progress, the progress is defined as an evolution, a progression, a development of the society. This notion is an important point because she speaks mainly about developments in our society and about advanced technology.

This year in class we studied several documents about the idea of progress and in particular the drawing named the evolution of communication and the text with called Human Possibilities of Andrew Niccol

In order to illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about the advancement of technologies.

We will ask ourselves if The progress, is for better or worse ?

And to Answer this question I will present two documents, the first is so the drawing about the evolution of communication and the second is the text of Andrew Niccol

The first document I have chosen is a cartoon named the evolution of communication, where there are five men standing on a hill and all have a different name, and each character on the left comes from a time older than the one on the right. To start the most left, cave man, is engraving a rock with a harmer he’s small because he’s bent. Then movable type using an elaborate mechanism to broadcast information. The third, mass publication, he is on the top of the hill, is reading a look and he seems cultivated, the fourth named email is focused on his laptop. And the last, Twitter, addicted to his smartphone he have a looking tired, he’s dressed like the cave man because he’s small and bent.

The evolution of communication used to be very positive up to mass publication, but it has degenerated with technological devices. Indeed, after the character in the middle, the men are less and mess smart, no need to socialize in real with news technologies. The level of language has suffered. Here, the cartoonist are showing how bad new technologies can be.

The second document I have chosen is Human Possibilities of Andrew Niccol who talks about the possibilities that parents have to chose the characteristy of their future baby.

Indeed this science fiction test deals on engenics, a couple goes to the geneticist in order to choose the characteristics of their future baby and not just about his health, but about his physical appearance and if he would be right or left handed.

In this document, we can see how the future might be indeed, people might go to a geneticist to concerve a child and choose his characteristics but all that is unatural

In my opinion, it’s a positive progress because we can eradicate all disabilities and diseases but the danger is that everybody would the same. Besides, some ill intentionned people like hitler could use it to serve their evil goal.

So the progress is a good thing because time goes on so it’s necessary that technologies advance but we can see that progress is sometimes difficult to be accepted by people because also as its limits and disadvantages like addiction I think of smarthpones or bad intentions of people who may have an adverse effect on others.
