Fiche culturelle: The Green Mile

The green line is an American film directed by Frank Darabont, released in 1999. He adapted the series Stephen King published in 1996

Paul Edgecomb is a former warden of Cold Mountain Penitentiary, Louisiana. Paul is responsible for prisoners sentenced to death. Attached to his profession, he makes a point of honor to treat humanely all prisoners. Since his retirement home he remembers the time when he met a black giant named John Coffey. Since jailed if found guilty of the rape and brutal murder of two white girls, John Coffey is nevertheless not a prisoner like the others. Very gentle and generous, he seems to hold an extraordinary power that he quickly shows to Paul and his colleagues. Intrigued, he leads his investigation about the murders of girls and discovers against all odds the innocence of Coffey. However John would still be sentenced to death. The arrival of John Coffey and the future events will change their lives forever ....

I congratulate this wonderful film, with an extraordinary actor play acting played that transmits real emotions. The presence and the quality of science fiction are intriguing. Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan mainly embody their roles to perfection, excellent and touching. We don’t see the past three hours so the film is superb. Music for its part is just sublime. Script script is great, inventive and beauty breathtaking. The end of the film is really painful. Indeed, John Coffey is executed by prison guards knowing perfectly his innocence. John Coffey is a sensitive character that touches us deep within ourselves. Tom Hanks excels as often, playing the role of Paul Edgecombe wonderfully, with a hint of sadness. But Paul has orders, and he is obliged to give the order to execute John Coffey in the electric chair, in front of dozens of witnesses who are waiting it. We can’t imagine all that the condemned to death undergoes at this time. And it is Paul who will reach out to him, showing him his friendship and tearing it away to his loneliness that has pursued John throughout his life. In the end, "The Green Mile" is a reflection on the human and its behavior, violence and kindness as well as a calling into question the hardness of the death penalty, still in force in many US states. The green line gives us a poignant life lesson that can not be forgotten anytime soon.
