SELF PORTRAIT
I chose Chuck Close self-portrait. His full name Charles Thomas “Chuck” Close is an American painter and an American photograph. Born in Monroe in Washington the 5th July 1940, his principal artworks are self-portraits often paint tailored. His first paint measure 3 meters high and 6 meters large.
Presentation
This artwork, called “Self-Portrait” was made by Chuck Close in 2004 to 2005. He used oil on canvas, and it measured 259.1 x 214.6 cm.
Description
When we look at his artworks, we do not guess that Chuck suffers of dyslexia, prosopagnosia and neuronal problem. He said that all he did “is an outcome of my particular learning disorders". His problems which avoid him to remember of faces are the reasons why he was attracted for self-portrait. He had to adapt himself and create his own technic. He proceeds transposing a photograph covered by a grid on a canvas and then, he makes square by square his face.
As we can see, every part is different type of forms like squares or circles of different colors.
This type of work makes me think of pixels on a photograph.
The paint is extremely high so when we approach it, we do not really recognize the face.
A picture taken during the making.
Comparison
I will compare this painting to “Dos Cabezas” by Andy Warhol.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is a famous representant of pop art.
The two type of painting are different.
“Dos Cabezas” is a lithograph made with acrylic and oil stick on canvas with wood support. The piece seems like a draft not finished yet. The colors are cold with white, green, beige and black. It measures 151.8 cm × 154 cm.
“Self-Portrait” is a serigraph. At the opposite of “Dos Cabezas”, his work is more realistic, and we see clearest the character. He used a lot of colors and forms. The works of C. Close are hugest (259.1 x 214.6 cm).
Opinion
I like this painting because despite of his difficulties, he is very skillful, and he prove that he can do an excellent work.
