Are We Sharing Too Much Online?
Social media in our current day and age has taken a big place in our society. People from child to elders have social media where they share their life and the life of their relatives, and they even share their or their relative’s personal information’s. But is oversharing personal information a problem? There are problems with oversharing personal information online, in my opinion, because sharing personal information about a tragedy happening to one of your relatives can invade the other person’s privacy and oversharing the life of your children online can have a negative impact to them when they become teenagers (Dean, 2013).
Oversharing personal information online of a tragedy that happened to one of your relatives can invade the other person privacy that he or she needs at that rough time. The host of the National Public Radio Scott Simon tweeted live updates from his dying mother’s hospital room for his one million followers (Dean, 2013). He got called out for the action of sharing this event invade his mother’s privacy since millions of people are seeing in such a vulnerable moment.
Oversharing personal information’s about the daily life of your children can have a negative impact to them when they become teenagers (CBC, 2016). Indeed, the relationship that parents have with their children could deteriorate, because they will feel humiliated by the photos of their youth, for example, photos of them when they were naked or when they cried like a baby. Teenagers tend to get emotional quickly and get affected by seeing their younger self’s privacy on the internet. Furthermore, in the video a mother says than is not her right to tell the story of her children (CBC, 2016).
To conclude oversharing too much personal information’s can lead to some problems since it can invade our relative’s private life in a moment of tragedy, and it can have an impact in the life of our children’s if it is sharing their daily life on the internet because they will eventually grow to become teenagers and get emotionally affected by it (CBC, 2016).
