Are we defined by where we come from?

Everybody’s life is different in lots of different ways. Some people come from well-known families and others out of nowhere, some come from wealthy families others from less wealthy. But, in my opinion, all of this can change. You can become well known and you can become wealthy with a bit of grit and hard work and occasionally luck. As Virat Kohli once said: “Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success.”

It is true to say that some people have an advantage in life over others because they get a better education or are in a better position to start with. For example, Donald Trump got given lots of his wealth by his father which allowed him to be where he is today (The president of the united states of America). On thecontrary let’s take Ralph Lauren for example; before he was famous, he was living in the Bronx as the youngest child of poor, Jewish immigrants. This just shows that hard work always pays off and that if you have the right mindset where we come from cannot define us.

However, to break out of the shell you were born into, there is still luck involved. For example, Sushil Kumar won the Indian version of “Who wants to be a millionaire”. Before the show he was earning £62 a month, by answering 13 questions correctly, he pocketed more than he would have earned in 800 years. His life changed overnight and he became well known. There was even a film inspired by his story: Slumdog Millionaire. He got lucky that night mainly by the fact that he knew the answer to some hard questions.

Furthermore, with the expansion of technologies, it is easier than ever to become someone successful or to get your name out there via the internet. If we take the example of Logan Paul. He grew up in a small town in Ohio making youtube videos with his brother. His channel proceeded to grow further than anyone imagined and has over 22 million subscribers. This proves to us that, yes, luck is a very important factor in becoming successful in this field. However, if he hadn’t put in the work during his youth he would not be really successful and living in a multi-million dollar mansion in Los Angeles.

At the end of the day, I do not believe that we are determined by where we come from. We can change the path we are on through hard work, advances in technology and perhaps a bit of luck.
