“We wanted flying cars, we got 140 characters instead”
Pete Thiel says “we wanted flying cars, we got 140 characters instead”. In a first time, I’ll explain the first part of this sentence.
When Peter Thiel says “we wanted flying cars”, he refers to the movie Back to the future. A 1985 American science-fiction movie directed by Robert Zemeckis. In this movie, we can admire the DeLorean built by Doc, a protagonist. This car gets specials proprieties incredible. But Peter is interest by one aspect in particular. In fact, this car can fly! So, people living in the 1990 hoped getting flying cars in the 2000 or 2010. But this today, we know this dream was unrealizable. The today’s technology doesn’t permit us to get this. So, they wanted flying cars but they get 140 characters.
In a second time, I’ll explain the 140 characters. On the social network Twitter, people get 140 characters and no one more to explain what they think. This social network reduces a lot the freedom of expression. 30 years ago, people dreamt getting flying cars, the symbol of the freedom but in reality, today we’ve got only 140 characters. This is the opposite of what they expected 30 years ago.
We can conclude people are probably disappointed to use only 140 characters on Twitter and get a freedom of expression reduced while 30 years ago they hoped getting flying cars, who represents the highest of the freedom. So, Peter Zemeckis criticisms a lot our society, for him, we have to take the road of the freedom but today, we are on the road of the antisocial and the servitude. I think the Peter’s reasoning is right because sometime the technology served to dominated population and not to help her. So, us, engineer of tomorrow have to reestablished this issue.
