San Francisco is a city in the state of California, which is one of the fifty states of the United States. San Francisco is located on the west coast of the United States, opposite New York (east coast) and a few miles northwest of Los Angeles. It is surrounded by the waters of San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate and the Pacific Ocean. Several bridges connect the city to the shores of the bay: the most famous are the Golden Gate Bridge to the north and the Bay Bridge, which connects San Francisco and Oakland to the northeast.  The city is also often called "SF" or "The City by the Bay".

Several islands belong to the municipality of San Francisco (Alcatraz Island: Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island), as well as small parts of Angel Island and Red Rock Island.

San Francisco was founded in  1776 by Spaniards.

 San Francisco is the most densely populated city in the United States after New York. The city of San Francisco has 884,363 inhabitants for an area of 600 km2.

San Francisco's climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with a distinct character.San Francisco's climate is very comparable to that of the Atlantic coast of Morocco or central Chile, in San Francisco the average minimum temperature is 13 degrees Celsius, and the maximums are around 22 degrees Celsius.  September and October are the hottest months of the year.

Several American artists were born or live in San Francisco on the west coast: there is Carlos Santana, born July 20, 1947 in Autlán de Navarro, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, is a Mexican-American guitarist, composer and singer of his kind, he also created a rock band called Santana, is an American Latin rock band, originating from San Francisco, California. It consists of five musicians surrounding guitarist Carlos Santana since its inception in 1966.  Like Carlos Santana himself, the band is known for popularizing Latin rock. Jefferson Airplane is an American psychedelic rock band from San Francisco, California. It was one of the first bands of the psychedelic movement and is part of the San Francisco Sound.

Tourism is the main economic activity of San Francisco, which is among the top ten American destinations. San Francisco is the 5th most visited American city by foreign tourists. San Francisco is a very touristy city with over 25 million tourists per year. There are many activities to do and places to visit: museums, monuments, beaches and parks. It is the third favorite tourist destination of the French in the United States, the city is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge (With nearly three kilometers long, the Golden Gate is one of the largest bridges in the world. It is today the symbol of San Francisco), the island and former prison of Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, the Transamerica Pyramid, the Coit Tower, its "cable cars" (tramways to visit San Francisco), Twin Peaks these two twin mountains are the second highest peak in San Francisco. There is a very important international airport in San Francisco. There are also several culinary specialties originating and made in San Francisco, such as Hangtown fries, Sourdough bread and Zuni chicken. San Francisco has a Japantown and a Chinatown, both of which are the oldest neighborhoods in the United States.

San Francisco is also a destination for conventions and conferences on culture, music and ecology. It is also the world's leading high-tech center, home to a number of world-renowned technology companies such as Apple, Tesla, Google, Intel and Facebook. On the academic front, it is home to the prestigious Stanford and Berkeley universities. San Francisco is also home to the Wikimedia Foundation, which includes the Wikipedia project, and the Internet Archive. San Francisco is a progressive city in the field of ecology and sustainability. It is a major cultural and economic hub in the United States and hosts several world-class events each year.
