HISTORY

If today nobody doesn’t know the existence of San Francisco and its natural bay, it’s necessary to know that it remained unknown during long centuries. It’s only in 1776 that a Spanish explorer discovers the city.

In 1846, the United States take California to the Mexicans. The village, populated then with some hundreds of persons, becomes San Francisco. But the discovery of a golden vein is going to change for ever the story of this city. It quickly becomes the headquarters of the gold diggers.

Now, the new El Dorado is not any more the gold, the silver or still the oil, but the computing and the wine growing. In fact, in San Francisco you can find the Silicon Valley with the famous offices of Google or the Nasa.

GEOGRAPHY

San Francisco is situated on the West Coast of the United States.

This city is also known for its numerous earthquakes.

Indeed, San Francisco, as all California, is situated on the big rift of the Pacific Ocean, called San Andreas fault. In 1906, there is a terrible earthquakes in San Francisco : 3000 deaths.

San Francisco count 805 235 citizens at the moment. With about 6 423 inhabitants by square kilometer, San Francisco is the second American big city in terms of density of population after New York. Moreover, the ethnic composition of the city is very varied with 43,6% of white people, 30,7% of Asian origin, 14% of Hispanic people, 7,6% of afro-americans and 3% of person of mixed race.

CLIMATE

The climate of San Francisco is of Mediterranean type. Temperatures are similar with the France but winters temperatures’ are higher than our country with 10°C to 15°C
