BIG BEN

Le nom réel de cette cloche est La Grande Cloche. L'horloge est située à Londres. Le début de sa construction en 1843 et a été terminé en 1859 par Charles Barry. Il mesure 96 mètres. L'horloge pèse treize tonnes. Pour atteindre l'horloge, les visiteurs doivent traverser trois cent trente-cinq marches. (335)

1. The actual name of this bell is The Great Bell. The clock is located in London. The beginning (commencer) of its construction in 1843 ( one thousand eight hundred forty- three)  and was finished in 1859 ( one thousand eight hundred fifty-nine) by Charles Barry. It measures 96 (ninety-four) meters. The clock weighs (pese) thirteen tons. To reach the clock, visitors must cross three hundred and thirty-five steps.

 La tour a été nommée Elizabeth Tower à l'occasion du jubilé de diamant d'Elizabeth II en 2012. Auparavant, elle était simplement appelée « tour horloge ».

Seules les personnes qui habitent au Royaume-Uni peuvent visiter Big Ben, après avoir obtenu une autorisation.

1. The tower was named Elizabeth Tower at the time of the diamond jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012. ( two thousand twelve) Previously, it was simply called “tower clock”.

Only the people who live in the United Kingdom can visit Big Ben, after having obtained an authorization.

Un incendie dévaste une partie du bâtiment du Parlement en 1835. À la suite de cet événement, une commission est mise en place pour choisir le nouveau style de l'édifice. Le plan qui remporte ce grand concours est celui de Charles Barry qui prévoit entre autres d’y intégrer un clocher.

The plan which gains this big competition is that of Charles Barry who envisages inter alia integrating a bell-tower into it.

Le son de la cloche « Big Ben » est dû au fait que celle-ci s'est fissurée en 1859,à peine deux mois après son installation officielle, ce qui lui donne cette tonalité très distinctive. Pour des raisons techniques, la cloche est orientée de manière que le marteau ne frappe pas à l'endroit de la fissure.

The sound of the bell “Big Ben” is due to the fact that this one fissured in 1859,( one thousand eight hundred fifty-nine)  hardly two months after its official installation, which gives him this very distinctive tonality. For technical reasons, the bell is directed so that the hammer does not strike towards the crack.

I chose Big Ben because I would like to visit London and see the clock.
