Doc 2: the man who « owns » the Moon

Dennis Hope is an American entrepreneur who claims that he owns the Moon.

He decided in 1980 that, since he owns the Moon, he could legally sell parts of it to anyone who was willing to buy pieces of it.

He even decided on the price: about $25 an acre, and he even made buyers fill in a land registration form and gave them a “lunar certificate”.

As a result, he claims that he made millions selling parts of the Moon. Some of the buyers were three former American presidents.

However, selling pieces of the Moon may not be legal according to space lawyer Vicky Jeong, since nobody is supposed to own a celestial body since the 1967 “Outer Space Treaty” that was signed that sets out certain restrictions, among which “the benefit of all mankind”.

According to the treaty, the exploration and use of space shall be carried out in the interests of all countries: outer space is the “province of all mankind”.

Therefore, selling pieces of the Moon is certainly not for the benefit of all mankind, but for the benefit of one man only.
