HOW TO IMPROVE

 = to make better

MY WRITTEN COMPREHENSION

[pic 1]

  1. Before reading, I should try to identify the document :
  • Check if there is a title , a name , a date , a photo which could help me ?
  • Is it a newspaper article ? a magazine article ? a poem ? a speech ? an advertisement ? a recipe ? an extract from a novel ? a song ?
  1. I should read the document three times before panicking!
  • I should divide the text in segments of meaning.
  • I should underline the words I understand.
  • I should circle the conjugated verbs.
  1. I should see how the text is structured:
  • How many paragraphs are there?
  • What do the paragraphs deal with? I could try to find a title for each paragraph.
  1. For each text, I should try to complete this grid with words not sentences:

WHO?

WHERE?

WHEN?

WHAT?

  1. If you don’t understand a word, a group of words or a complete sentence, don’t panic!
  • Check the segments of meaning. Try to find the value of the word: is it a verb? an adjective?a noun?
  • Observe the words, the sentences BEFORE and AFTER the difficult term or passage.

Example  I don’t understand “dreadful” in the following passage :

“They had a serious road accident. It was a dreadful experience. The driver and his passenger were both taken to hospital in emergency. Only one of them survived.”

  • What is the value of “dreadful” : grammatically, is it a verb? an adjective? a noun? _____________
  • BEFORE “dreadful”, the words “serious” / “accident” can help you.

AFTER  “dreadful”, “hospital” / “emergency” / “survived” can guide you too.

  • Try to explain “in emergency”.

Does it mean:     it was necessary   /   it was urgent   /   it was optional   /   it was unnecessary

  • So in your opinion, is “dreadful” positive or negative ? Try to find an equivalent for it:

Does it mean “surprising”? “joyful”? “terrible”? “ nice”?

  1. Look into details

I don’t exactly know what the text deals with,

I don’t really understand everything in the text or key words ( = important terms )

but I can deduce a general category .

Example 1: I don’t understand “carnation” in the following passage.

A romantic present.

He was too shy to propose to her. He often visited her and invited her for a walk in the park.

One day he felt he had to be more daring so he offered her a bunch of carnations.

She took his nice present without saying a word, put them delicately in a vase which she placed on the dining-room table; then she turned round, smiled tenderly at him and said: “When we are married, I hope you will often buy me carnations.

  • What is the grammatical value of “carnations”? Is it a verb? an adjective? a noun? ______________
  • What does the word “ carnations” mean? I don’t know but I can imagine which category it belongs to.

Which terms before and after “carnations” can guide me? 🡪 the word “vase” is very useful in this text.

  • So I think “carnations” refers to the category of __________________
