This document is a painting on canvas by Édouard Manet. Édouard Manet, born on January 23rd (the twenty third) 1832(eight-teen thirty two) in Paris and died on April 30th (the thirtieth) 1883 (eight-teen eighty three), he was a French painter and engraver of the late 19thcentury(19ème siècle). He also painted well-known works such as
Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Lunch on the Grass in english) in (1862) and Olympia in (1863) |
This painting is named: Un bar aux folies bergères (A bar with shepherd's follies in English) of dimension: 96 cm high and 130 cm wide, therefore a medium size painting. It was painted in 1882. Today it is exhibited at the Courtauld Institue in London.
In the foreground, we can notice a marble counter on which is placed, many and all kinds of bottles of alcohol, fruits in a bowl, and flowers in a vase.
In the second plan, at first glance, we can think of a portrait, more precisely of a woman.
She stands behind a bar, we can deduce that she is a waitress.
This woman with an inexpressive face appears motionless. After extensive research, we know that this woman is actually called Suzon.
Suzon is dressed in a blue dress with many interesting details such as lace, flowers, buttons. She wears a beautiful bracelet and a necklace too
In one of Edouard Manet's paintings, a courtesan lying on a couch, wearing only a velvet necklace and a bracelet.
This is Olympia, another painting that Manet painted in 1863.
But why is the artist adorning Suzon with the jewels of Olympia? Maybe to play with his memories, going back to childhood.
Because the bracelet that appears on the wrist of the courtesan, then the waitress, is a copy of a real jewel that belonged to his own mother.
In reality, just like Triple Self Portrait of NRW (painting studied in class), it is a mise en abyme, that is to say, this painting actually reflects a secret, it hides a double meaning.
At first glance, you can't see the background, which shows him a crowd! The question that everyone is asking is, what is this crowd doing behind a bar?
In reality, this background does not represent the direct crowd but just the reflection of the crowd in a mirror.
This one is in fact represented as the public of the folies-bergères, a current theatre, a Parisian theatre inaugurated on May 2nd (the second), 1869(eight teen sixty nine)
To paint this canvas, the artist didn’t set up his easel at the Folies-Bergère. He did this scene entirely in his studio, where Suzon came to pose between his working hours.
