Steps to Transform Food Systems toward Economic Growth and Promotes Sustainability and Ethical Principles

Food security has become a global problem because of the rising population. Scientists and Agronomists try to formulate creative ways to produce more food through agriculture to sustain the growing population. However, some of these methods have their effects on human health and the environment. Moreover, some of these methods of improving agricultural production, such as pesticides and fertilizers, are expensive. Agroecology is one way of ensuring ethics in food production, food sustainability, and economic growth. Fortunately, there are few steps to transform food systems towards sustainability, ethics, and economic growth.

The first step is to create a link among people in the food system, such as producers, consumers, and transporters. When a link is created, everyone will be able to access food easily. In India, people are avoiding chemically produced food because they are afraid of the possible side effects. Still, people in urban areas, particularly those in the middle class, are the most affected. Food sustainability is the most important part of the food system because insufficient food encourages people to invent ways of maximizing production, leading to environmental pollution and other problems in the system.

Another step is educating people on the advantages of a healthy diet. Some people eat chemically produced and preserved food because they are ignorant of the effects it may have. Once they are aware of the benefits of a healthy diet, they can make a sober decision. In India’s rural-urban food system, people are shifting to safer ways of crop production that are less harmful to human health and the environment.

Developing proper food disposal methods is another way of sustaining a healthy food system. Consumers should be encouraged to invest in composters, which is a cheaper way of food disposal. Furthermore, homemade manure can be used in kitchen gardens or sold to farmers. Manure costs less than inorganic fertilizers. It is safer when used on crops for both environmental and human consumption. Garbage disposal companies charge a lot of money; however, it will cost less to dispose of other waste if food waste is used in the composter. A sustainable food system can be promoted by organizing agricultural fairs and exhibitions. These events are important because they create a medium for all people in the food system to meet, show consumers that crops grown without dangerous chemicals can be appealing and delicious, and support farmers through funds raised during the events to expand their farms.

The final step is to organize campaigns that promote food systems, economic growth, sustainability, and ethics. During these campaigns, people can be taught about a healthy diet, safer farming methods, and easier transporting crops. Campaigns reach wider audiences; hence, a faster transformation of the food system. During these campaigns, farmers can carry promotion farm produce for consumer sampling.

Sustainable food systems, such as Agroecology, save a country many resources, including land, money, and water. The steps mentioned earlier benefit everyone in the food system. Consumers get access to food, and producers get customers and transport for their produce, boosting the economy and ensuring that crops are handled properly. The government should fund projects that promote sustainable food systems because they ensure a healthier nation.
