Recent studies have shown that
baby talk, or more accurately
Infant Directed Speech (IDS), may
provide a vital bridge in language
acquisition for infants. IDS,
characterized by its simple words
and exaggerated intonations, is
common to almost all cultures, but
the purposes of this seemingly
universal phenomenon have until
recently been unknown.
FMRI scans of mothers with
preverbal infants listening to
recorded IDS sounds have shown
increased activity in the language
centres of the brain; a reaction not
present in fathers, or childless
women when similarly stimulated.
Baby talk, it seems, may be
hardwired into the experience of
human motherhood as an
important stage of language
acquisition and growth in children.
Scientifically sound information is
helpful in our interventions with our
clients. Making brief mention of
the value of baby talks in therapy
with a mother struggling with post
natal depression provides not only
information but releases tiny bits of
endorphins and dopamine which
assist with motivation, which
eventually assists in changing
behaviours.
