I’m going to present a subject deeling with the topic of immigration and integration. To begin, I think that it’s important to make difference between these two terms. Immigration it’s the fact of leaving your country to go in another and Integration significates that you try to be integrated and adopted in the host country. The question that I choose for the analysis it’s: Can we consider that migrants are integrated in the present society ? To answer, I’m going to present first the integration of migrants and its evolution and second the reasons of migrants ‘exclusion in the actual society. For the analysis, I will use three documents. One extract of the novel OVER THERE: How America Sees the World written in 2005 by G.Shteygnart and a newspaper “ Melting pot or Salad bowl “ in Taipei times by R.Dahrendorf in September, 23, 2004. The third document that I personally chose is an extract of website “Al día” in 2018 which is about laws and services for migrants in the USA.
Firstly, I’m going to speak about the integration of migrants . To begin, there is a difference between the XIX century and today. The goal of migration was not the same for our ancestor as we can see it in the text “Melting pot or Salad Bowl” (l2/3). The goal for our ancestors was going to The US to live the “American Dream” and today it’s an another point of view and goal of migration (l3/4). There is a priority to leave the war in their country and they are not preoccupied by the destination as it’s explained l7/8. Also, some solutions are put in place for a better migration.” Melting pot and salad bowl”, what is it? It’s important to explain these two processes and it’s aim. First, «Melting pot signifies that a person who come in the US did every effort to be integrated in the nation like it’s explaining l13/14. This tentative to be adopted by Americans permit a real mix of culture and a union of population. I quote: “Our ship had a different name, but now we are all Americans.” But despite some effort, lot of migrants are not integrated and I going to demonstrate it in my second part.
Secondly, it’s clear that migrants are not integrated in all the world and I’m going to explain some reasons of this exclusion. To begin, it’s evident that politics has an influence on migrant exclusion and it’s at the heart of the debate. In my personal document, we learn that the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) want to modify the statues of the immigration system dating back more than 400 years in the US. This demonstrates that Trump has a very closing politics of migration. He thinks that immigrants are a burden for the economy of the country. I quote in my personal document: “take severe measures against immigrants who depend “fundamentally” on the government for subsistence”. In my opinion, it’s an extreme decision not justify because lot of migrants try to be integrated in the host country after leaving the war in his home country and cut all means for people who only want to rebuilding theirself it’s absolutely not a good solution. It’s also important to keep in mind that this new decision touch 18 million resident citizens 9 million Americans. Furthermore, an issue which probably any solution, the stereotypes. In the extract of “Funny looking”, we have a perfect example of stereotype. It’s deal with a swarthy man who is persecuted in every place when in travel in the entire World (l14/15) but except to the USA. It’s mentionned that : “ And so America, or New-York , to be perfectly precise, has always meant for me safety through heterogeneity.” Note that this feeling of “normal” citizen in New-York it’s just before attack of the World Trade Center which going to make a corner in the history of USA. September 11, 2001 it was the first time that terrorists attacked the USA and it was a really traumatism for Americans. “ Despite the events of September 11, I am still less despised in America than elsewhere”. It’s after this event that was born the racism in the USA and we suddenly feel it at the end of the extract.
