How can the dystopian genre represents our reality ?

Introduction:

The dystopian genre belongs to the imaginary world, but it can also be used to reflect reality.

In this talk, I will discuss about the representation of reality in the dystopian genre

While the documents [the novel by Margaret Atwood" The Handmaid's Tale", an excerpt from the novel “1984” by G.Orwell, and an excerpt from "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury] suggest that the dystopian genre can be a representation of ( can represent) past reality through the use of ( by using ) historical events.

The painting by Boris Pelcer called "Air Pollution" and the article from BBC News, “Handmaid's tale' protest at US Ohio abortion bill”] highlight that the dystopian genre can also depict present reality by denouncing current problems

How can the imaginary genre of dystopia represent reality?

I will first discuss that dystopian literature can represent reality and principally past society by exploiting historical events and denouncing them

At another time I will demonstrate that the dystopia genre can also represent today's society and also the near future by condemning human inaction toward actual crises

1) Past representation

First of all the dystopian genre represents and also denounces reality by using past references and past society's problems

For instance in “The Handmaid’sTale” the author Margaret Atwood uses references to the WWll with the hierarchization of society into different castes with determined roles by colors and

the “colonies” which recall the Nazi prisoner marking system which differently identified Jews and other deportees in WWll concentration camps, in the same idea the sequestration of the servant can symbolize the concentration and working camps.

Furthermore, the text from George Orwell's novel “1984” denounces society's control and Surveillance by referring to the totalitarian regime in the URSS with the famous caption "Big Brother is watching you" under “the posters that are plastered everywhere”, “ The black moustachio’s face gazed down from every commanding corner”.

Similarly to this, the text from Raid Bradbury's novel, "Fahrenheit 451" refers to

the USA's situation in 1952 with a condemnation of "McCarthyism" a censorship era , burning books and eliminating people permit to censor any different idea and will provide society to the "Serenity. Peace" by cleaning with fire any bad idea “fire is bright and fire is clean”.

The dystopia genre is a way to remember a part of history by representing it in a genre that highlights the emergence and the derive of a totalitarian society

2) Present representation

Moreover, the dystopia genre can also represent reality in the present by decrying today's actions, and modern societies' problems and how this can possibly lead to a future dystopian world.
