Myths and Heroes : Why does society create myths and heroes? How can myths and heroes change our lives? How can myths and heroes change the direction of the course of History?

I am going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion: A myth can be defined as a story about gods or heroes, it can be a popular belief, a tradition or a false notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon.

We will ask ourselves , Why does society create myths and heroes? How can myths and heroes change our lives? How can myths and heroes change the direction of the course of History?

I – The heroes in our life and history.

Since the beginning of mankind, some people or groups of people have distinguished themselves by their actions, their words, their creation or their qualities and are considered heroes by the society and in people’s minds.

First, there are people considered heroes, thanks to what they have been able to accomplish for humanity. People like Martin Luther king and Rosa Park who have fought for the black cause all their lives. There are also people like Elon Musk the creator of Tesla and Space X or Steve Jobs the Apples Visionary that contribute or have contributed to the development of humanity on the technology plant.

Then there is hero who wants change the History as a defender of common values. For example, we can take the website WikiLeaks who has made remarkable contribution to free speech and human rights by holding governments to account by revealing human rights abuse and protecting the human rights of journalists and their sources.

Some groups can fight for more specific cause, that the case of GreenPeace who is a non governmental and non profit organization which was created in the late 60’s and early 70’s. They are activist who fight for the protection of the environment and

biodiversity. For example they conducted an operation to stop oil exploitation on the Alaskan coast.

Those group are considerate by many people has hero because they fight for the good of democratie , or like GreenPeace for the good of the planet.

Finally, there is also many person who are an object of extreme admiration and devotion. These people are icon. For example, a lot of kid’s want’s to look like their favorite sportsman or singer, actor who are icon in their field like Lewis Hamilton , Serena Williams , Beyonce or Brad Pit.

All of these group or people have an impact and modify our lives. They change or have changed the course of History and the actual society.

I – Myth and fictive hero in our life and history.

Depending on different cultures and era, myths are also different. Heroes allows to dream by the myths they represent.

Thanks to the effects produced by works of fiction, many myths are created, first in literature with for example Dracula, Romeo and Juliet or Harry Potter, which shows us the victory of love over hate.

Many fictious hero are invented through, comics and cinema like Superman , Batman or the Avengers. They symbolize civism , strength , and courage. With this many qualities they become a model , an ideal for kids who wants to be like them and do what superheroes
