The death penalty was suspended in the United States from 1967 to 1976 after the Supreme Court established a suspension of the death penalty. In 1976, after a reversal of the Supreme Court, States were able to reintroduce the death penalty in their own legislation.
At present, 38 States on 50 plan the death penalty in their texts of law. 30 applied her at least once since 1976. At the federal level, the death penalty was restored by the American government in 1988. 3700 people are on death row in the United States.
In March, 2001, the country crossed the threshold of 700 executions. 700 people (including child offenders) were executed in the U.S.A. since 1976.Texas at the top with 270 executions in 24 years.
The abolition of the death penalty in few States of America:
Michigan ( 1846 ), Wisconsin ( 1853 ), Maine ( 1887 ), Minnesota ( 1911 ), Alaska ( 1957 ), the Vermont ( 1968 ), West Virginia ( 1965 ), Iowa ( 1965 ), North Dakota ( 1973 ),Washington DC ( 1981), Rhodes Island ( 1984 ), Massachusetts ( 1984 ), New Jersey ( 2007 ), of the state of New York ( 2007), New Mexico ( 2009 ) and Connecticut (2012).
The abolition of the death penalty implies life imprisonment for inmates on death row. Despite the reintroduction of the death penalty in 1976, the States of Kansas, New Hampshire, the South of Dakota and the US army never applied death penalty since then.
It is clear that the number of States that abolish the death penalty augments. Today, there is sixteen out of 52 states (50 + 2: Washington DC has a judicial district apart, the American army has an own judicial system). Besides Texas, number of executions is reducing in all the States.
