MY AMERICAN HERO: SEARGENT STUBBY
(Diapo 1)
I have decided today to tell you the story of an original hero. My hero risked his life for the American homeland but is not a man or a woman: my hero has four legs and is none other than a dog.
(Diapo 2)
Stubby was the most decorated war dog of the First World War and the only dog to have been appointed sergeant. Found by his owner Corporal Conroy on a campus in 1917, Stubby was illegally sent to France when the United States entered the war.
(Diapo 3)
During a battle at Saint-Mihiel in France, the dog was wounded in the front leg by German grenades. He was a great help to the morale of the wounded soldiers in the back of the trenches while healing from his wound. He became the regiment's mascot. Having survived a gas attack, the dog was able to prevent the attacks and alert the soldiers thanks to his sense of smell. His skills did not stop there. Able to differentiate between English and German, Stubby found wounded soldiers in no-man's-land and warned their comrades. He could also detect the sound of shells well before the soldiers and carried messages under fire. This dog owes its rank of sergeant to the capture of a German spy whom it attacked after hearing him speak. Neither anyone nor Corporal Conroy could imagine that Stubby could become a war hero.
(Diapo 4)
I chose to talk about Stubby because I want to prove that humans are not the only heroes who have contributed to America's image. Many animals have been rewarded for their bravery and assistance to people. However, their achievements remain unknown.
