Compare and contrast 2 poems

Theme/mood/message:

The poem 20th is about love, it showing the devotion the writer will give up anything. This poetry sounds like a love letter, it’s a professing love. But the poem is an unwanted love because he will do anything for her, he would do anything if she loved him back and he always say ‘let me’.

The poem Anne Hathaway is about love and a professing love too (sounds like a love letter). It’s an elegy poem. The poet is not like the other poet of love poetry he isn’t saying that she is perfect and ‘the most beautiful’ he is realistic. The mood starts positive but ends with sadness.

Structure:

In 20th he has a way of writing because first he shows his devotion, then elaborate. Each lines are very short I think it’s because it makes sound more interesting, long lines will bore the reader even if it’s short, it can mean a lot. There is a lot of repetition it emphasizes his point of love. This poetry is rhyming, he could go on and on, but stops because it’s a way to say ‘I can go on but I will love only you’. There is no caesura it means that he could go on and on about his love, no pauses so he doesn’t pause. Every line has an enjambment. It makes it go on and on.

The poem Anne Hathaway is a modern sonnet because it’s a rhyming couplet but it doesn’t follow the shema it means that it doesn’t really follow the rules. In this poetry there’s some enjambments every lines so it makes it go on and on. But there are some caesura.

Techniques:

The poem 20th contains alliterations and similes. The alliterations are the ‘deep devotion’, the poet had used alliteration to signify that these words are important. The meaning of ‘deep devotion’ is deep love and so the ‘deep devotion’ are very important in this poem because it’s talking about how he loves her. The similes are ‘deep as the deep Atlantic ocean’, it has described his love is as deep and wide as the Atlantic ocean which also shows that his loves will not change anymore as he was deeply in love with her and his heart will not be replaced by someone else.

In Anne Hathaway there are loads of metaphors like ‘he’d written me, the bed a page beneath his writer’s hands’. This poem had used alliteration to signify that these words are important like 20th. He has got some personifications to compare her at something else. But there is no similes, anti-similes.

In conclusion, the poems that I compared are almost similar but on some very important issues they are not so finally the two come from different kinds of poetry.
