STAGE 6
- What may explain why Carribbean migrants felt « black » first and foremost in the 1960’s ?
→ Carribean migrants felt « black » first and foremeost in the 60’s because of the mainstream society which didn’t want to consider them as British people. It is also due to events in the US and in the Carribean (we don’t know which). They follow the way other migrants see themselves.
- What does the journalist mean by « doing the real work » ?
→ by « doing the real work » the journalist means that what really changes minds and mentalities is the culture and the society. That means that it is not politic or books that makes history but it’s the people.
- What is ironic about the situation of people with Carribean or African roots living in Britain today ?
→the irony of the sitation resides in the fact that nowdays, Black Britains are accepted and accept themselves as British people but on the other hand real British people want to get closer to the european union by letting some part of the union be independent. In fact they don’t want to be british anymore while black britons took years to consider themselves as british.
- According to the journalist, why has British society always been multicultural ?
→ british society has always been multicultural because there were Irish people, or Scottish people who went to England.
I think that this article is rather positive because even if it talks about a separation of the UK, it shows that migrants that came to England feels so British that they would be the last Brits who defends the Union. We also learn much about the evolution of the immigrant’s place in England. To end we can conclude that only us, the people, can change the history.
