THE STORY OF THE AIR JORDAN 1

In the 80's. Nike spotted the young Michael Jordan, who then distinguished himself by his excellent performances in university competitions. Early and prodigious, Michael Jordan was also of interest to other equipment manufacturers, such as Adidas, a direct competitor of Nike.

Under the colors of his university in North Carolina, Michael Jordan is making the floor vibrate and, the young man knows it: he will soon make his debut in the NBA. After a final university season, Michael Jordan is on the verge of signing with Adidas to enter the arena.

But then again, Nike is also on the move. In 1984, after a number of discussions with Michael Jordan's agent, David Falk, Nike managed to convince the young hopeful to sign with Adidas...

His agent resulted in a contract that was unheard of at the time. With the same advantages as those granted to tennis players, Nike has just signed Michael Jordan for 2.5 million dollars over 5 years, the creation of its own clothing line, and the payment of royalties for each item sold.

Michael Jordan, the new 23 of the Chicago Bulls, enters the NBA arena with an unprecedented sponsorship deal with Nike. "His airness, as he is known, will soon make NBA history. And that of fashion.

So when Peter Moore designed the Air Jordan 1, he signed the sneaker along with a logo that was to become iconic... The Wings logo.

Peter Moor told the story of the Wings logo: "Nike Vice President Rob Strasser and I had just returned from a meeting with Michael Jordan's agent. We had decided that we were going to create a brand with the kid. We also decided, based on David Falk's suggestion, to call it Air Jordan.

On the return flight, he started thinking about what his logo would look like. He walks in the plane and sees this little kid and he has this set of captain's wings on his shirt. The stewardess had just given them to him. So I asked for them and then I started drawing the wings. I put a basketball in the middle. This was all done on a napkin while Rob and I were going home. That became the logo. »

But in 1988, starting with the Air Jordan III series, the Wings were replaced by the mythical Jumpman. Judged impersonal, the Wings are indeed replaced by the silhouette representing Michael Jordan in full jump.

The Jumpman was in fact inspired by a photoshoot made for Life magazine a few years earlier, in preparation for the 1984 Olympic Games. Michael Jordan had not yet signed with Nike and was wearing New Balance on his feet. The staging of this image is grandiose. Michael Jordan performs a dunk... A la Jordan!

And if Tinker Hatfield is responsible for this logo, Peter Moore already had it in mind. Indeed, Peter Moore already wanted to take over this silhouette but Nike was not comfortable, wanting to avoid a possible copyright infringement.

The Jumpman has become a legend!
