SPACES AND EXCHANGE: SCREEN TOURISM

This notion deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our worlds is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. Screen tourism is a growing trend and has the potential to create stand out for Northern Ireland in the international markets. We can relate this notion with the screen tourism.Today more and more people can travel around the world. Nevertheless, people travel for different reasons. When we travel we discover, explore and meet people. There is a kind of tourism that has been created thanks to the fans of series and film, the “screen tourism”.

How is film an economic advantage for a country?

We will see how the simple shooting of a film/series can revive the economy of a country.

First of all, screen tourism is an interesting way of satisfying the visitors because it allows them to take part in different activities around a common theme: their favorite movie or series. Those tours offers them a travel into an other world, time or univers. For instance the Game of Thrones tour in Nothern Ireland offers to the visitors the visit of some famous places of the series such as the Iron Island or Winterfell’s Castle. The visitors can wear some typical costumes of the series for example, which permit total immersion into the Middle age. The growing number of the movie and series has sharply increased the demand of tour.

We will therefore take the example of Northern Ireland with Game of Thrones. The image of Ireland has been tarnished by the civil war that raged between 1969 and 1998, killing nearly 3,500 people. Although its history attracts tourists intrigued by these events, the country is now looking to build a new face. Today, Belfast relies on these natural landscapes to host the studios. The country even invested in film studios where scenes from the saga were shot. The success of "Game of Thrones" has attracted hordes of tourists from all over the world since its launch in 2011. According to an article about Northern Ireland, she could never afford a commercial like the one the show did to them.

To conclude, filming can boost a country’s economy by advertising landscapes and opening film studios to the public
