Troisième notion : Idea of Progress

Intro :

Good morning, today I’m going to talk about the notion of progress. To introduce the subject I must explain the meaning of this word. Progress allows the world to evolve, to change for the better, to develop through scientific, technological and technical discoveries and innovations which is essential. But Progress requires taking risks and innovations are often called into question.

We can therefore ask ourselves the following questions : Is progress always a progress? And should we fear progress ?

During this oral we will rely on 3 examples studied in class. The first part will be on connected cars the second will be on genetics then we will finish with artificial intelligence.

We are going to try to understand what are the various debates and problems that these innovations can entail.

I- Connected cars

The first problem with progress is a problem of danger and a problem of regulation. Let me explain. Take the example of connected cars. Many of these cars are a perfect example of progress, because with cameras, radar, and ultrasound, these cars would increase safety and comfort.

However, many questions remain unanswered. The first one is are we safe in these cars ?

With my class we studied a newspaper article that told the story of two hackers who managed to take the control of a vehicle while it was moving along a public road. They managed to turn on the air conditioning and activate the wipers to prove that they could do it. However if they were ill-intentioned they could have disable the brakes. This is where it gets dangerous.

With my class we also studied the example of google cars, I will use this example to talk about the second problem: the accident.

Let’s take a very concrete example. If tomorrow I hit a child with my google car while I slept behind the wheel. Who is guilty ? Is it me or is it Google? The question is whether the law should change and are we safe in these cars? Personally my point of view is to say that there is no risk 0. And someone who is drunk or on drugs is very dangerous too.

Let’s take the example of the AI, the artificial intelligence. The AI can be see like a perfect example of Progress because it’s something new, it’s something profitable. The paradox is that there is a lot of mans who are not afraid of progress but who think that the AI is an existential threat. Elon Musk who is the director of Space X analyzed the situation and he conclude that we need to be very careful. But he is not the only Stephen Hawking one of the most Impressive Minds of our time talks about artificial intelligence as a machine capable of killing us because they are too Cleaver. If two men as intelligent as Musk and Hawking think it is more than necessary to control artificial intelligence then may be that for some innovations
