SEATS AND FORMS OF POWER.
I’m going to talk about the notion of places and forms of power. First of all I would like to give you a definition of this notion. Power is most of all the ability to influence the behavior of people. We could relate this concept to the theme of Canada. Nowadays, traditional societies are becoming more and more societies based on the capitalist market driven economy. Globalization affects a large majority of cultures, while some are fighting to preserve their traditions and customs like Natives in Canada, who are threatened. Aboriginal peoples in Canada are the indigenous peoples within the boundaries of present-day Canada. They comprise the First Nations, Inuit and Nunavut.
So, we may ask ourselves the question : In what ways do Natives assert their rights ?
To illustrate this notion I will talk about 2 documents : the first one is "Citizenship ?" and the second one is "Stop stealing our land"
In the document "Citizenship?", the narrator and his mother, who live on the Canadian side of the US-Canada bored, want to go to Salt Lake city to visit the narrator's Sister. After being turned back at the American border, they try to get back to Canada.
But we can also talk about the document "Stop stealing our land". This text deals with the issue of the resources and the population left aside around the Arctic Sea. Two inuits say that they are not recognized by their government, thought the United Nations ( ONU in French ) have acknowledged them as a nation. Resources extractions such as oil or gas can be very polluting and may demand the relocation of some Inuits and that's why they have have hired a lawyer to defend them gathering all the Inuit peoples unable to be stronger enough in the negotiation with the central government. These people opposed to the central Government because of the pollution they don't want to be relocated and also, because they don't receive their part of the companies' benefits.
Revitalizing there languages for example renforce the community feeling and enables them to create a stronger counter power.
We can suppose that some attitudes towards peoples have to change and therefor take their voice into consideration.
This document also rises the issue of the recognition of the right of indigenous people and the superpower of the stake of the business of oil and gassing our twenty first century.
To conclude I would say that Natives Canadians have a strong identity and claim their heritage despite their simplicity of life. The Canadian land is sacred. They are determined to stand up for their rights, even if they are marginalized and isolated. I think in these times of globalization of lifestyles, we should respect the customs of other cultures, although they may seem insignificant and off the beaten track.
