Oral LVA: Places and forms of power

Introduction:

In the story of the world, power reveal by different ways. People are always control. Power is the ability to control and determine the decision of other individuals. The parents have a power in their children. Power allows some people to share a doctrine. Or impose them. Power also means influence. The culture is a great influence in the world. Some country, have intellectuals and artists. Who persecuted, jailed because of their opinions. During the Cold War USA and USSR is fighting for power. The two great powers wanted to have the first economy and the first military power. In this context, we may wonder: To what extent does great power become the greatest weakness? First, we can see that people are in control. The big governments keep an eye on the lives of the people. Second, we can see the resentment of people in times of conflict. We can study the notion with different documents. An extract of the novel written by Kristin Levine: The paper Cowboy. The first chapter of 1894 written by George Orwell. Firstly, we can see that people are in control. The great example of control is “Big Brother”, the great symbol of control in the novel 1894 by G.O. We can say also that there were many controls during the Cold War. In America like in USSR, the government keep watch people. They put traitors in jail. The Reds referred to the communists in the American camp. Everyone was likely to be a Red person or to know one. In this case, they are forced to give names. The extract of the pursuit of Happiness which we study in class illustrate the idea of control. This is the romance story with Sara and Jack. The extract show, during the Cold War you can lose your job if you don’t give name. Sara’s Brother Eric is summoned to denounce people. He is summoned to a room with little light and questioned in front of five men. His superiors Mr. Ross is described as a severe and hostile man. The five men appear to be FBI agents. The government has launched the red chase. The narrator describes Ross as a Nazi. He has the eyes of a predator. It can be said here that the red chase looks like an extermination of the enemy.

What’s more we can say also that people can be jailed because their opinions. In the novel written by Kristin Levine, “The Paper Cowboy” we can say that there are many suspicions. Inside the war, people fear about the enemy. Two boys discover old communist newspapers. They suppose that there are a communist in the area. They suspect the neighbor. Communist was not allowed to express their political opinions during the Cold War. Otherwise, they were jailed, or they were persecuted or names name. We can see that in a great nation, there are mistrustful.

Then, we can say that the government can be control everything. One the famous example is the control exerted by “Big Brother” and his party. In the novel, 1894 G.O shows that all the government can be a dictatorship. In a dystopian world, lives a smallish man: Winston Smith. Sometimes, consider like an antihero. Because his weakness and his ordinariness. Winston Smith wrestles with oppression in Oceania. A place where the political party scrutinizes human actions with over watchful “Big Brother” Meanwhile he has a relationship with woman. The party spies with the “telescreen” and “police of thought”.
