----------- MYTHS AND HEROES -----------

Introduction

I am going to talk about the myths and heroes.

First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion: A myth is a story that may or may not be true, who comes from the history, the imagination or the mythology. A hero is any person really intent on making this: a better place for all people.

In order to illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about the help that the artists gave to society during the last 60 years.

To what extent: does artists helped society during the last 60 years and why they can be defines as heroes?

I. Comics during the 2nd W.W

The first document I have chosen is a propaganda poster of 1944 with the figure of captain America created by Stan Lee. In this poster we can see this words “join captain America and the us armed forces”. This document illustrates the help of Stan Lee to winning the 2nd ww, moreover he created the myth of the perfect solder.

Captain America shows us how writers helped the society with the American figure.

The second document I have chosen is the official paper of the comic code authority of 1954. The comic code authority was an organization who regulated comics in the U-S and to regulate comics they established rules for that. One of these rules was “good triumphs every time against evil” or “Any representation of violence and sexuality is prohibited.”

This organization disapproved extremities of comic authors and protected the young generation for a better society. But later rules became less strict and authors can finally express them self.

Both documents show us how artists helped society in the 2nd ww by any means.

II. ARTISTS from 80’s to today

The first document I have chosen is the poster of Star wars IV: A new hope of 1977 created by George Lucas. In this poster we can see in the foreground the good force with Princess Leila and Luke and in the background, we can see the dark side with Dark Vador. It’s an obvious comparison with the 2nd ww with the good and evil = U-S and Nazi’s.

George Lucas created a universe to forget the trauma of the 2nd ww and help society move forward.

But some writers wanted to remind the public the 2nd ww, not to make the mistakes of the past.

The second document I have chosen is a famous scene of the movie “Saving Private Ryan” by Steven Spielberg. In this scene we can see a representation of a landing of US army during the 2nd ww. We can see men attacked by Nazis and all atrocities committed as decapitated arms. The goal of Spielberg is to choke people, moreover it’s an anti-war scene.

Steven Spielberg wanted to create an anti-war society with his movie and with that help society.

Both documents show us how writers helped society to be better of the last, with the trauma of the 2nd ww.
