Hello, I am Salomon Northup, I am a black free American. I am born in Minerva. I have a wife Anne Hampton and two children: Margaret and Alonzo Northup. I have regained my freedom, not so long ago. I experienced many horrible moments during my poor American black life. Today, I live in Glens Falls with my family, but this has not always been the case. In fact, I have lived twelve years as a slave and far away from my family. It is very difficult for me to speak about this twelves year because it is a dark period of my life. However, I must tell you my story to warn you of the danger that threatens us. When I was thirty-two years old, I was abducted by two men who presented themselves as two members of a circus. They wanted a good violinist for their circus. Naively, I have not warned my wife to my departure. My wife not seeing me come back home, didn’t understand why I left my family without leaving a trace. I was drugged by the two liars, then sold at James H. Birch, a slave trader from Washington DC, for $650. Then, I was shot in the “Yellow house” and I was beaten by many people because I always said, “I am a free American, you aren’t allowed to do this”. Later, I was sold to William Ford and renamed “Platt” by my kidnappers. Mr. Ford was a good master and cared about his slaves. But we have to work very hard every day and the penalties were extremely harsh. But Mr. Ford had many debts and he was forced to sell me to other people for pay off his debts. I was sold to Mr. John M. Tibeats. It was a horrible master, but he wanted to kill me because I was against the fact that he mistreats me. And then I was saved by Mr. Ford and sold to Mr. Epps. I was his slave for ten years. He was ruthless with me and he was beating his slaves every day. He even raped a slave named Patsey. One day, a Canadian carpenter come to the Epps’s plantations and he wanted to abolish slavery. I decided to reveal my real identity and he offered to send my letter to my family to regain my freedom. It was a dangerous action because he could have been killed for doing this, but I accept and not long after a sheriff come to the Epps’s plantation and gave me back my freedom. I come back to my home to recover my family. It was a difficult moment for me because there are many emotions at this moment. After twelve years, I recover my family and I was a grandfather.
