INTRODUCTION
How is sexism rooted in English-speaking society?
For starters, what is sexism?
This is the belief that members of one sex are less intelligent, capable, skillful, etc. than members of the opposite sex, especially that women are less capable than men.
I chose this subject because it was obviously close to my heart, but also because I would like to talk about it from a new angle. I would refer this theme to the theme of “making society”, in the axis “equalities and inequalities”.
I- EXAMPLES OF SEXISM
To begin, I will illustrate my point with two first documents.
Doc 1 Photograph
The first document is a press photograph of the newspaper “the babysitter” published in 2013. It shows a woman whose mouth is erased and replaced by sexist phrases. The fact that she has no mouth makes it possible to imagine that she lets herself be done. The sentences written are perfect examples of what a woman can hear on a daily basis. They should be what you want without saying anything. This image shows what some women hear all day
I chose this document to show a concrete example of what women can experience on a daily basis. This is a perfect example of what sexism is. However, sexism is also present in a man's life.
Doc 2 article-> dancers
Sunday Telegraph article, published in 2021, was accuses the BBC of being sexist towards male dancers.
This is a competition called "Strictly come dancing" held in the UK.
During this competition, the judges made many sexist remarks about the men. Remarks about their bodies apparently not being "suited" for dancing. The public obviously revolted, complaining to the BBC hundreds of times. Just before we saw an example of a sexist situation that women can endure and now we see this situation but in reverse. We see that when it's men who are subjected to sexism, the world is much less panicked. Sexism is a problem that can affect both sexes but more often it is women who are affected. After showing you two examples of sexism in the English-speaking world, I would like to show you how English-speaking society combats it.
II- SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT IT
Doc 4 article -> London
The article from the Independent published in 2022 deals with the fact that the Mayor of London would like to introduce misogyny lessons for boys in primary school. Mr Khan believes that this new campaign could prevent many misogynistic situations by helping men to speak out when they witness problematic situations. This campaign was supported by many football clubs, such as Manchester City, which posted posters in men's locker rooms. The mayor insists that if we do nothing when we witness sexist scenes, we accept it. For him, work on gender inequalities must begin in primary school. He wants women in his city to feel safe at all times, in all areas. I chose this document because I found it interesting how Mr Khan tries to eradicate sexism from London and the fact that it is a man who acts.
