Subject 1: Are you personally in favour of legalizing gay marriage?
In France, the law which allows the gay marriage and the adoption for same-sex couples has been voted in 2013. However, this subject is still sensitive and there are regularly demonstrations, some people go in the streets to protest against gay marriage. I’m personally totally in favor of legalizing it, for several reasons: in the name of equality, of tolerance and because of the absurdity of the opponents’ arguments.
To begin with, the first and one of the most important articles of the Declaration of Human Rights is: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Unfortunately homosexuals and in general LGBT don’t seem to be included in “all human beings” because nowadays their rights are denied, and especially the right of being married. That’s unfair: marriage is not only a token of love and a symbolic act, but also a social recognition, and only a part of the population is authorized to have this recognition. Homosexuals don’t make anything wrong in the fact of being married, they just want to be treated equally, and it’s absurd to refuse them a freedom because they have not the “good” sexual orientation. Furthermore, they can’t content themselves by the civil union: firstly because marriage is more significant, represents something stronger than a simple “union” in our society, and secondly because civil union legislation is not able to provide the same rights and benefits as legal marriage. So, legalizing gay marriage means a progress for equality. What are the arguments of the opponents of equality and why are there not available?
Secondly, the opponents of gay marriage don’t have any strong cases. Some state nature’s case. According to them, same-sex marriage is something “immoral” and “unnatural”, because marriage is the union between a man and a woman. That’s wrong: the natural world didn't create marriage, humans did. These arguments reveal just the homophobia of those who present such arguments, and anything else. Others take the argument of religion, but we can’t accept that. Let’s take the example of France: it’s a secular nation, so religion and state are separated: as a consequence, religion should not have any influence in debates about societal laws. The fundamental definition of marriage is: a legal union between two adult human beings who have no direct biological connection with each other. Religion is not mentioned, and moreover, gay couples will be married at the city hall, no in a church: marriage is not a religious institution but a socio-legal one governed by the state. Religious beliefs about marriage should never be an excuse to attempt to the freedom of others who do not share those beliefs. In fact, the opponents of gay marriage have not any legitimate arguments: it’s homophobia by any other name.
