Indeed, the narrator is picking cotton in a plantation, in fact he is forced to pick as much cotton as he can. Each day, his large basket is weighed in order to know how much cotton he picked: if the slave picked less cotton than expected, he was whipped. If he picked more, then he had to pick up the same amount for the days after.
Hence, slaves were fearful // anxious of the weighing, they felt uneasy but in the same time they were exhausted // worn out because it was a traumatic experience // a never-ending torture. Most of the time, slaves were whipped after the weighing hence the following quote: “After the weighing, follow the whippings”
