The Learning Journal
Task:
You will keep a Learning Journal (LJ) throughout ESUS 1, 2 and 3. This is to demonstrate evidence of your ability to reflect on your learning journey in Higher Education.
Format:
You will write five entries during your whole ESUS programme. For each entry you will be given a choice of questions / statements to respond to, and you will be required to hand this in by a certain date. Failure to do so will result in a fail grade for your LJ.
You must adhere to Royal Holloway hand-in guidelines and submit a word processed copy as well as a TurnItIn copy for all entries. There are two differences to a normal academic hand-in (an academic hand in is when you submit work for ESUS or your academic subjects), and they are that firstly, instead of taking your work to the Office, you will drop it in a box outside Jess’s office, and secondly you will be writing your name on the submission form (there is an example submission form in this pack).
You must write a minimum of 300 words per entry. There is no maximum word limit.
The hand-in procedures for this are at the back of this document. Your teacher will go through them with you in class, and you must do your best to adhere to them in full.
Marking:
Your tutor will look at your journal after each submission and make written comments on your paper copy. When you submit the next LJ you should also respond to the comments your teacher has made – this will be just a hand-written response to the comments on your entry. This will require you to keep your old LJ entries and resubmit them so your tutor can see the answers to their comments. This will act as a dialogue between you and your tutor.
The last submission of your LJ should include all paper copies and feedback forms.
At the end of ESUS 3, you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction for your LJ. Students not demonstrating a minimum level of achievement, or failing to hand in any one entry, will be awarded a Fail.
The Learning Journal is compulsory and forms part of your overall assessment for ESUS.
