Summary | This article explains the perspective of NPL in a context of improving the quality of knowledge employee of a company can get and how to improve that knowledge. The article goes and describes NPL as a set of guiding principle, attitudes and techniques that enable individuals to change behaviors pattern as they wish (Kong & Farrell p.255). It describes as well that people have a representation system that they prefer over another these representation systems are visual, auditory and kinesthetic. The articles explain very well that the people are usually understand the world not for what it is but from what they perceive the world to be and have a hard time learning new ideas or concept unless being presented in their preferred representation system.
Usefulness How does this theme relate (or could relate) to Business Analysis and to your work environment (past or present)? | This article is more than useful in the context of business analysis. This article is a tool that allows one the principal describe in the Babok 4.4.2 about communicating information to stakeholders. Communicating information does not simply involve pushing information out and assuming it was received and understood. Business analysts engage stakeholders to ensure they understand the information and gain agreement. The business analyst acts on any disagreements. The method of delivering the information may need to change if the stakeholders are not receiving or understanding it. Multiple forms of communication might be required for the same information. (Babok p.68) As described in the Babok information must be transmitted and understood, the business analysis then needs to understand that people (stakeholder) might understand thing from different points of view and the NPL allows you to be more receptive to those point of view and identifying those different representation systems that the stakeholders adhere to. It could be part of the stakeholder analysis add a column on which representation systems is theirs. It will allow easier communications with the stakeholder and better influence over decisions, since you can adapt the presentation or document to suit the specific needs of the stakeholder that you are trying to reach, as it’s described in the section 4.4.4 of the Babok p.69. Again, this goes with what the 5 C’s of a great BA, it adds to the idea that a great BA needs to be able to collaborate and communicate. Adding this tool to the BA tool box will allow him to be better, by being able to understand the people that you are working with and being able to influence those stakeholders to get the result that is the best for the project. It will help create better relationship with your stakeholders as well when the channel of communication is open and working you do feel more incline to work with the other person and be willing to do more as you feel listen and understood. NPL will be helpful in my current work, as we are moving towards the end of the project, I am to do more and more presentation it will be important for me to include more different approach on my presentation to make sure as much as possible of the representation systems are being taken in consideration. And it will be useful as well in the relationship that I have with our stakeholders, I will try to be more mindful of how they speak, perceive things so I can adapt myself to increase the efficiency in my communicative approach with them. The next step is to find an article that explain more of the technique to notice what are the signs to recognized but this one is the perfect starting point to understand the importance of NPL in business analysis and regarding communications in general.
