CSR – Buisness English
Does the use of CAFOs compromise Ben and Jerry’s mission? Why or why not?
In my opinion, the use of CAFOs does compromise Ben and Jerry’s missions. Their mission statement concerning their social mission is to ”use [their] company in innovative ways to make the world a better place.” Furthermore, on their website, they say that they “build awareness and support for the social & environmental issues that [they] feel strongly about”. However, with the use of CAFOs, is harmful for the animals but also for the environment. Indeed, the fact of having confined animals releases heavy concentrations of animal waste into the ground, water sources, and air.
Has the growth of Ben and Jerry’s contributed to any form of greenwashing by the parent company, Unilever? If so, how?
At the start, Ben and Jerry’s was a small company in Vermont which was based on pure and locally dairy products. It then grew quickly as it was bought by Unilever. They had to supply quickly around the world and find the cheapest supply chain and products to grow fast while making and important benefit. They then said in their mission statement that they wanted to support environmental and social issues but didn’t make any change to the use of CAFOs. Therefore, the growth of Ben and Jerry’s has contributed to a form of greenwashing by Unilever.
In general, how do you think companies can show they truly care
about CSR – find examples of companies doing well.
In my opinion, I think that a brand can show that they truly car by proving that they are taking action and making a change. There are many ways to do so, for example:
making donations, planting trees, investing, changing their way of doing, being eco-responsible, creating a plan.
Pantagonia is one of the best examples of companies that are doing well when showing that they truly care. Firstly, they found directly within their website for their organization (“The Activist Company”), but also for other causes which creates a direct link and also give 1% of all sales to environmental organizations globally. They also support grassroots environmental efforts and considering the origins of their products, they use sustainable or recycled materials.
Another famous example is The Walt Disney Company. On the environmental aspect, they are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing waste, conserving water resources, and protecting the planet. They have two programs, Animal Rescue Effort (Disney Conservation) and Project Green, which are environmentally friendly and keep the earth a clean place. On the social side, they want to make an impact and create a social equity. To do so, they are committed through cash and in-kind contributions, volunteerism, their signature social impact program focusing on children’s hospitals, and their investments in youth. They also are committed to respecting human rights, monitoring the safety and integrity of products, and reducing the environmental footprint of their supply chain. To finish, they even try to create positive, safe, fun, and inclusive entertainment experiences that audiences of all ages can enjoy together.
