Le dossier traite les défis éthiques à relever pour l’avenir de l’humanité. Il comporte un article de presse extrait du Guardian, publié le 7 septembre 2018 par Yossi Sheffi, sur la nécessité pour les entreprises de respecter l’éthique, et des graphiques circulaires montrant l’évolution prévisible de 5 types d’énergie renouvelables en Corée du Sud. C’est la notoriété qui fait d’une marque qu’elle attire des acheteurs ou non. Les marques peuvent faire les frais des contenus publiés dans les médias par les ONG. La révélation de scandales comme le travail des enfants pour Nike ou l’approvisionnement en huile de palme produite par des plantations ayant détruit des forêts pour Nestlé influe sur la demande et les résultats financiers. Face à l’émergence et au développement de critiques et demandes éthiques de plus en plus véhémentes, ces entreprises ont dû réagir. Pour éviter de perdre de nouveaux clients, elles ont accepté de se plier aux exigences des ONG. La leçon à retenir est que l’éthique doit constituer un objectif aux mêmes titres que la recherche des profits. Les énergies renouvelables actuelles sont axées sur les bioénergies et les déchets. Elles devraient être transformées en énergies axées sur l'énergie solaire et éolienne. On peut se demander si parallèlement, on prédit une diminution ou une élimination de l’énergie nucléaire, une diminution ou non de la consommation de pétrole, de charbon et autres sources d’énergies grises. On peut aussi se demander si 100 % de l’énergie consommée pourrait être un jour renouvelable, si des moyens de stockage sûrs de l’énergie éolienne et solaire pourraient être inventés. 260 mots

1. How have industries affected the environment? 10 points

Industrialization is an important factor for the economic growth and development of a country. However, as factories became full-scale industries and manufacturing units, they also became harmful to the environment. Factories operations result in the emission of pollutants, release of toxins into soil and air, accidental leaks and dumping of waste material into oceans and rivers. In addition to this, industry can also be directly blamed for destroying big areas of nature on the planet. Forests are torn down for wood, taking away the natural habitat or animals and other wildlife. All these actions damage the environment by contributing to global phenomena such as climate change, the greenhouse effect, ozone hole and increasing desertification. As a consequence, many species are at risk of extinction, but we are also facing an increased risk of falling victim to illness and disease, as we are exposed to air, water and soil pollution among others.

2. Why must industry take the lead in solving environmental issues ?

And what must be done in order to reduce industrial pollution ? 10 points The main reason industry must contribute to the environment protection is that every business is responsible for complying with a range of environmental legislation to reduce the impact their operations have on the environment. It is then their responsibility to check the consequences of their actions and also to protect environmental resources. However, industries have been able to ignore or bypass pollution laws because of the lack of effective policies and poor enforcement drive by pollution control boards. For this reason, government must work in advocating for legislation and other measures to lay a strong foundation for protecting the environment. Some initiatives can also be taken by industries such as contributing on the assessment of pollution control programmes in terms of costs and benefits, to increase the progress with respect to environmental protection and relating to the management of hazardous substances, clearing up of polluted water bodies, and deforestation.
