First of all, the notion of private sphere & public sphere perfectly represents the book in its entirety. Indeed, this theme is really put forward with the idea that the government controls the inhabitants, and the multiple activities that it can practice there. He controls them by forbidding access to books, depriving them of scientific but also literary knowledge, and by censoring multiple ideas. The government censors them because their ideas and books do not fit the rather authoritarian ideology that the government has. Thus, by censoring the main knowledge, the government takes control of the public sphere of the inhabitants. In addition to the censorship of ideas, propaganda is used in the houses through large advertising screens so that the citizens accept only one ideology, which is theirs. The consequences of this are that their public sphere is reduced to simple discussions between inhabitants, watching interactive televisions “millie loves it”, and listening to radio all day long which makes their lives superficial. In case of awareness, they are unfortunately killed like the young Clarisse who had a certain intellectual curiosity. So, we see that the book is centered on the public sphere and the impact really. In addition, the private sphere is also impacted. This is particularly the case when a house is burnt down because of prohibited possession of books in the house. By attacking houses, States therefore impact the private sphere since houses present a large part of a person's private life. So, we see that one of the main themes of the book is the private and public sphere.
Then, the notion of fiction and reality is explored throughout the book. Indeed, the fiction is present in particular with the government which controls not only the information which circulates around it, but also the way and the people who circulate it. This results in the fact that citizens, not knowing what is true or not are generally confused. This is the case of Montag, who gradually discovers the real world thanks to Clarisse but who, for a long time, was immersed in a lie controlled by the State. More precisely, the main character is at the beginning of the novel a simple person who is proud of his work and who enjoys burning books. However, he will quickly notice the trap in which the government locks them up and will ask many questions about the secrets that society is hiding from them: “Nobody listens any more. I can't talk to the walls because they're yelling at me. I can't talk to my wife; she listens to the walls. I just want someone to hear what I have to say. And maybe if I talk long enough, it'll make sense.'' In this part of the book, Montag wants to understand more about the real world by talking to other inhabitants. Moreover, in this scene we still see the innocence of his wife Millie who does not question herself. Thus we notice that this dystopia is based on fiction and reality by considering that the fiction in which they are is reality.
