1) Explain the three situations in which Hélène needs to speak English.

The three situations in which Héléne needs to speak english are : - She has to speak English with groups of British & American visitors. - Outside of July & August many tourists sites only propose visits in French & English, so she has to give guided tours in English to many nationalities. - In July & August there are more and more Russians, Japanese and Chinese tourists. They aren’t tours in their languages so unless they bring their own guide with them Hélène has to use English.

2) How does Hélène prepare her presentation ?

- If she knows the site ?

She doesn’t have much research to do but she has to find out as much as she can about the group so they can adapt her presentation to their level of interest.

- If she’s not familiar with the site ?

She prepare her presentation in many ways as she would in french. She collect as much informations as she can if possible in english. She then put everything in the right order and try to eliminate what’s not important, after that she prepare a series of notes.

- When she presents somewhere for the first time in English ?

She practice with her friends if she’s going to use a word who’s new to her,

- If she needs to use new, technical words ?

She try to find out how they should be pronunce. She knows a couple of teachers from England so if she needs she ask them.

What advice would Hélène give to anyone who has to make their first presentation in English ?

- Her first advice would be to throughly prepare their presentation

- Her second advice would be to make a series of notes but don’t write out the whole presentation it looks and sounds unprofessional.

- Her third advice would be to use a simple & clear english the notes should be concise with only informations you want to give to the group plus one or two key expression.

- Her fourth advice would be that unless you are guiding a group of specialists it’s not necessary to learn a huge list of specific vocabulary.

- Her last advice would be to learn the key words and structures that will allowed you to give a good general presentation.

1. Greet the group : “Good morning everyone”

2. Introduce yourself: “My name is Hélène and I’m your guide”

3. Say what you are going to show your group : “This morning we’re going to visit the grounds and the interior of the château”
