Devoir 1 Anglais
Part 1 – Jobs
1- In her job as Tour Guide, Hélène often uses English in 3 different situations:
- The first is when there are a group of native speakers as American or British who come to France
- The second is during the summer time (July and August), when people from different nationalities come to visit France, she need to guide them in English and sometimes in French.
- The last one is when there are group of non-English speakers (mostly Russian, Chinese and Japanese) accompany by their personal tour guide and she needs to communicate with their tour guide in English for giving some advices.
2- Preparation of her presentations:
- If she knows the site, she does not need to do any research. She has to find information about the group and then she can adapt the presentation depending on the level of interest. For example, a group of school student will not have the same interest with a group of architecture students.
- If she is not familiar with the site, she needs first to gather as much as possible information, puts in right order and eliminates what is it not important in order to make her more confident for the presentation.
- If she presents somewhere for the first time in English, she has to practice with friends first. When she uses new words, she has to be careful on how it should be pronounced. Fortunately, she has some teacher friends from England that they can help her for that.
- Hélène does not need to use new and technical words. She just only needs to use depending on the type of group. If the group is composed by specialist and architecture student, it would be interesting to use it. Otherwise, for students from high school for example, it would be useless.
3- Advices from Hélène for those who are going to make their first presentation in English:
- Present the way how it is described.
- Make a series of note which must be clear, fairly simple and concise.
- Should not read the notes because the audience would loss the interest and it will be very unprofessional.
- People not may be native speaker, so it does not need to use complicated words.
- Adapting the vocabulary depending on the group. If you are leading a group of specialists, it would be smart to use technical words. However, if the group is composed by students, keys words would be enough.
Part 2 – Welcoming
First, she ensures if the group is the right group by asking the name of the College. Then, she presents herself and ask if everyone is here before to start the tour.
1. Greet the group: Good morning everyone
2. Introduce yourself: My name is Helene and I am your guide
3. Say what you are going to show your group: This morning we are going to visit, the grounds and the entire chateau.
4. Ask people to do something: if you would like to
