For us, tea is not just a drink. It has been an important part of our daily lives for over 300 years.
It all started in 1706. At that time, the favourite drinks were coffee, gin and beer - even at breakfast time! Even tea had been consumed for thousands of years in China, but it was not imported to England until around 1706. At that time, many people considered tea to be suspect.
One man, Armand Heritage, was convinced that tea was a wonderful thing. Since he no longer wanted to drink beer in the morning, he started selling tea in his tea shop in London. He promised to sell only the best quality and the best blends of tea. His promise and commitment to tea won him a large following - including Jane Austen and Charles II. By 1750, tea had become the preferred drink of the working class. Despite the anger of pub owners and the rise in tea taxes, Armand Heritage continued to sell his tea - in the Golden Lyon, the first tea shop in London.
