The history of New York is a summary of the big dates of the history of the United States.

Indians and colonist

Originally, the Indians occupy the place of « Lenape », the tribe of Alquonquins, the place was called "Mannahatta" or « the island of Hills »

If Christopher Columbus discovers officially America in 1492, the tranquillity of the algonquien people will not be disturbed during still a century.

A few decades after Colomb, in 1524, François Ier sends the Florentine Verrazano to explore coast, with the aim of finding a passage westward.
It doesn't miss list from the bridge of his boat the New York Bay which he renamed « New Angoulême »
The Englishman Henry Hudson, for the Dutch Company of East Indies, who unloads  the first one in the bay  which, from now on, bears its name. 

From « New Amsterdam » to « New York »

The first colonists arrived, and the counter is transformed into a village that they renamed « New  Amsterdam ».

The birth of New York is peacefully made: in 1626, Peter Minuit, governor of the colony, buys the island of Manhattan to the Indians for only 24 dollars of time is the equivalent of 700 €, this sale is an incredible swindle because the Indians who were suposed to perceive the money were not the owners ot the island !!
The first relations with the Indians are commercial. The Indians gives up little by little their cultures to concentrate on the hunting of fur  animals.
In 1643, first confrontations burst. These become then so frequent as in 1653, Peter Stuyvesant is obliged to make build a fence ("Wall") protector on which now corresponds to Wall Street.
The fence also serves as protection against the English people, whose territorial continuity of colonies is hindered by the small Dutch colony.
The English people put on a lot of pressure and, in September, 1664, they take the city. The New Amsterdam becomes "New York".
