How does Timberland create products that show their responsibility to the planet?

Timberland shows a responsibility concerning the planet by production clothes and shoes that are respecting the environment. In fact, we can assume that Timberland use for 58% of their cotton for Apparel from organic. As they are certified sources, nothing is created by chemistry and polluting the planet by industrial gas relating to diffusion of CO2 in the ecosystem. Moreover, 94% of the Footwear they are producing, Apparel and Accessories are leather sourced from LWG Silver or Gold-rated tanneries which is a 100% recyclable material. They also have as a final goal to have 100% in every category related to sustainable development. To conclude we can assume that Timberland has a lot of conviction related to the environment, they acts by controlling their productions and their waste management, but they are also a very active brand by planting millions of trees all around the world. We can for sure say that Timberland has a huge impact on the consumer society, because they assume their values about environment and try their best to share them by advertisement and social medias.

2. How does Timberland work to protect the natural environment?

Moreover their production, Timberland has the ambition and already manage their time to reducing pollution in the world. First, they try to reduce as much as they can the wast of their products. They already reduce their waste for about 75% then before which is a huge step to protect the environment. Timberland also try to reduce their consumption of energy as they can. In fact, they project to reduce their use of energy by 10% and source 50% of their energy from renewable sources, by 2020. But the brand did not stop itself to limit their production and their waste. The brand is also very active in the world by planting trees all around the world. Actually, they planted over 8.7 million trees from 2001-2015 and hope that they will be able to reach 10 million trees by 2020. There is a Green Index rating on their production are made to make consumers clearly understand that Timberland has environmental values, and that they can make and produce good products with an honorable quality, respecting the environment. Timberland have also been sharing their environmental values around the world by different advertisements and messages trough social medias. It is a subtile act to try to impact their consumer because they don’t act directly for the environment, but they encourage their audience to do act the way way they do. This way, consumers will prefer buying products that are safe for the environment, due to Timberland reputation.

3.  How do employees volunteer their time? What social causes do they support? 

Timberland employees are encourage to do community services to participate to Timberland’s values concerning the environment. Each employee gets up to 40 hours of paid time off every year to volunteer, in any way they would like. In fact, the brand’s employees completed more than one million hours doing community services, in 2015. timberland has as a goal to achieve 500 000 more hours. Actually, employees volunteers their time by doing extra job or activities such as planting in abandoned places making it an event. For example, on October 13th, Timberland volunteer their time greening up over 25,000 square feet of abandoned Reading Railroad tracks to support the creation of Center City Philadelphia’s new Rail Park. The company is sure about how these experiences enrich their employees but also how it create a complicity as volunteers are coworking together. The main purpose of these type of event is to share the brand values by doing concret acts. We can assume that Timberland’s values are shared bu employees because 79% of Timberland employees did volunteered in 2011. The brand’s community also made cotton came back in Haiti, and is a sponsor of the Smallholder Farmers Alliance to become a potential customer of this new cotton supply chain. Moreover, within five years, some 34,000 farmers (representing 17,000 farms) are projected to be owner-operators of a new network of social businesses that will more than double their current income, result in a minimum of 25 million trees planted.
