CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION

In this expose, we will learn about democracy and explore the difference between the democracy of the Ancient Greeks and the democracy of modern America and the United Kingdom.

I/DEFINITION

-Democracy is a system of government where citizens are allowed to participate in the proposal and creation of laws.

-Democracy is a government of the people by the people for the people.

II/THE TYPES OF DEMOCRACY

We have two types of Democracy:

1/DIRECT DEMOCRACY

Under this system the people take direct in the affairs of the state. The people themselves are the rulers and they are the same time. They themselves make the laws, enforce them and decide cases according to these laws. Such a democracy existed in city states of ancient Greece and Rome. Some practices of direct democracy are still observed in Switzerland and in some states of the USA.

Direct democracy is when citizens get to vote for a policy directly, without any intermediate representatives or houses of parliament.

2/INDIRECT OR REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY

After the creation of large nation states, in became impossible for all the people directly to participate in the affairs of state, under this form of government the people elect a small number of representatives or delegation and give them the authority to run the government. Since the people rule through these representatives, we give the system the name of indirect or representative democracy. Today in almost all the countries of the world there is indirect or representative democracy.

Representative or indirect democracy is when people choose to vote for who will represent them in a parliament.

III/THE FONDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF REPRESENTATIVES DEMOCRACY

The most basic and fundamental principle of government can be summarized as the following:

-The role of government is to protect rights, which are summarized as life, liberty, and property

-Government power is derived from the power of the government

Election in Democracy

Democratic elections are definitive. They determine the leadership of the government. Subject to the laws and constitution of country; popularly elected representatives hold the reins of power. They are not simply figureheads or symbolic leader. Democratic elections are not limited to selecting candidates. Voters can also be asked to decide policy issues directly through referenda and initiatives that are placed on the ballot.
