Christian Boltanski, Exposé

Introduction

First I'll start by talking about the artist,Then I will talk about his work and finally I will describe two of his many works

(First) Christian Boltanski is a French artist born into a family Jewish during World War II. He began painting at the age of 14, so he never knew

the artistic education . The Most of the paintings who he realizes are mostly large format Representatives sad characters or many historical scenes.

(Then) Boltanski want to communicate the emotion in all artistic expressions that he uses: Photos , movies, video . His favorite themes were the memory, the unconscious, childhood and death. He uses many materials: the photography, cardboard, lighting , candles etc ... He used many articles who related his past.

He uses photographs of portraits because he seeks the emotion and the facial expressions in these works . Many photography refer to deportations of war because he is Jewish and is very sensitive by the Jewish people pain .

So we can say that this works talks about the childhood and the dead memory.

He works also the theme of hallucination, where absence and existence merge.

Christian Boltanski has perspective in some of his videos the Jews pain .

They talk about the horror of war. Absence is mainly the theme in his work: Video as the photo are presence, memories who bring absent.

He is member of Narrative Art . This movement claims the use of the photograph with a explication text .

(Finally) Description de deux oeuvres

La chambre ovale, 1967

The paintings Christian Boltanski realizes between 1958 and 1967 represent the childish memory pictures . They show bad events.

This paintings, Oval Room stages shows a lonely character sitting on the floor.

Prisoner , interned,child punished, the scene is mystery.

This painting shows the loneliness.

Réserve, 1990 (it's the last part that we will address)

In 1988 Boltanski grabs a new element, the garment. This is a piece that alludes to the warehouses in which the Nazis put the effects of deportees. The use of the garment in Boltanski is linked to the theme of death, as was the case for photography.

For him," The clothing is a mark who indicating a past life".
