My name is Romain, I am 19 years old and I have just lived the greatest adventure of my life.
Two years ago I heard about a new way for working abroad.
I have always been close to nature and I am a fisherman and hunter, I carry out these activities with an absolute principle, the respect of the fauna and the flora.
So when I was offered to spend two years there where nature is the queen, where man lives in harmony with her, I immediately prepared my suitcases.
That’s how in just three weeks I left my hometown of Normandy in France, to join the wild and icy lands of Alaska in the Yukon Valley near Fairbanks.
As soon as I arrived I discovered a new world where people did not speak the same language as me, did not eat like me. The culture shock was more present than expected.
The indigenous people who habit these lands are by far the most welcoming of all those who my many travels allowed me to meet.
My mentor, Jake is a 55-year-old man, he is a farmer, like his father and all the generations before him. He lives with his family in these lands more than 100 km from any village.
These means of subsistence are hunting, fishing and farming. This work became more and more difficult with his ages and he decided to transmit his way of life, his know-how, his culture, Jake decided to welcome students like me to his home.
This sudden change of life was not difficult, on the contrary. I really felt in my place, living from nature, what more wonderful for me. The task i have to entrusted are very varried
, from hunting and cultivation to clearing pipes that allow the water to flow from the river to water the livestock fields
but also domestic water. Of course when I speak of farming do not imagine the big tractor no, but more a big horse pulling an old plough, suffice to say that here the oil is rare.
, the most impressive is that all these tasks we carried out by hand, in these remote lands time seems to have stopped for more than 100 years.
To earn money and pay these taxes Jake sells wood and salted meat. For salting Jake possesses what could be described as a miracle of nature, a source of water naturally saturated in salt, a relatively rare phenomenon especially at more than 600 km from all sea.
Jake taught me to understand and interpret nature as these ancestors taught him.
The woofing is exactly this sharing of culture based on trust and mutual help,
thanks to this fabulous adventure my vision of the world changed my goals in life have evolved and I emerge from traveling with a new goal: preaching goods made of his mode of education that made me a happy and committed man for the planet.
