The idea of progress: Could Artificial Intelligence destroy the humanity?

I am going talk about the idea of progress.

First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion: The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change – a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.

In order to illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about the Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence : a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers or the ability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior. Today we will try to attempt to answer the question "Should AI could destroy the humanity ?"

This year in class we studied several documents about the idea of progress and in particular a press article about AI who talks about the fear of a famous scientist, Stephen Hawkings, who says AI could destroy us. We also studied a novel called "True Love" by Isaac Asimov.

In a first part I will talk about the threats of AI and in a second part I will explain how AI could help us and make our lives better.

I have mix feelings about AI.

First of all, I will talk about the threats of AI. In the press article, Stephen Hawking says that AI could destroy us. This document raises issues about AI threats and warns us about the fatal risks for he human race. This is what Hawking tries to conceive us by saying that AI could superside, outsmart, out-invent, out manipulate us to eventually spell the end of the human race. Hawkings says we can't compete with AI because Humans are limited by slow biological evolution.

Hawkings is not the only scientist who thinks that about AI. Indeed, Bill Gates says that AI could destroy us.

Then, I want to talk about "True Love". In this novel, Isaac Asimov written a story about a computer that super sided his creator and act like a human. Indeed, Joe, the AI, develops the personality of Milton his creator and finally took his place. I know that just science fiction but nowadays we observe that science fiction is getting closer and closer true reality.

This two documents, makes us realized that AI could be dangerous.

In my opinion, we shouldn't go to far in the developing of AI and we should limit his utilization because we can't know what can happen in the future.

The fear about AI is legitimate

On the other hand, AI could help us and make our lives better.

First, AI is truly beneficial as the vocal synthesizer of Hawkins proves it. In medicine, AI can know perform precise and safer surgeries. Moreover, It seems to me that we are pretty far from the threats mentioned by Hawkins. Our best technologies in communication, science, warfare, medicine are still controlled by men.

Moreover, AI could be helpful to humanity. Indeed, with AI the rate of vehicle accident decrease of 27%.

I guess that AI and humans could be coexist in the future and AI can makes our lives easier and better
