The Idea of Progress

Good afternoon, today I am going to talk about the notion of the idea of progress. Firstly, I’ll get across my ideas for you to this concept. The progress is synonym of development, improvement, hope and expectation which involves evolution and change. In my dissertation, I will focus in improvements in social organization and evolution of people’s mentality. At this point some questions come to my mind. Did medias contribute to social progress? To answer this, I am going to lean on texts we studied in class in order to stand out the significance of journalists, medias and networks in the development of society.

In the previous centuries, not only were women considered like men’s property, but they couldn’t also have their civil and political right. Not until the second half of the twentieth century did women get the right to contraception, divorce, dispose of their body and demand for professional equality, among others. In spite of what I’ve said before, we’re not arrived at a perfect equality between two genders and we have still to fight for doing away with the deep inequalities.

In our class we studied two documentaries which were two speeches: one of Janelle Monáe and the other one was from Oprah Winfrey, both of them pronounced in the Grammy Awards Prize-giving ceremony.

On one hand, Janelle Monáe talked about Washington referring to the women’s protest which took place on 21st January 2018 just after Trump was designated President. In addition to this, she took advantage of being rewarded to reported women’s harassment by empowered men like Harvey Weinstein and to give the voices of girls to stand up for their rights. As everybody knows, Monáe is such a successful woman that she decided to use as her power as her experience so as to change people’s mentality.

On the other hand, not only Oprah had difficulties in succeeding like the woman who we know now, but also in her childhood. Apart from being billionaire business woman at the head of an empire, she is one of the most influential and powerful personalities in UE. In her speech, she stood up for the victims of sexual harassment. She wants to create a world where men will listen and respect women in whole corporate associations.

Their speeches were considered like the most meaningful because of being as written as pronounced by black women. These women have suffered from double discrimination: first due to being women, and then, being black. Unfortunately, nowadays life is still being easier for men than for women.

In spite of the fact that the struggle hasn’t finished yet, we can affirm that media help us to take advantage against to the inequality. Thanks to them, we had the opportunity to listen these speeches. Medias help us not only to know more about everything, but also know other opinions in order not to be manipulated. Social medias join people who share their culture and their thoughts. Social medias are a new world, a virtual one where we can meet injustices, meet our enemies and fight for our rights. If we are aware of what is happening in it and we take notice of every suffering, we will be more conscious and we’ll be close to the perfect world that we reclaim. Like some actresses did with movement #METOO, which come up in order to follow Harney Weinstein’s case, we have to report and fight to show each case.
