I am going to introduce the idea of progress. First of all, we can define the idea of progress as an improvement, a change that contributes to make the world better. To illustrate my notion, I will talk about environment. environment is a burning issue in our society. Indeed, the planet has been damaged by several actions and projects, and now it is more than urgent to change urban living conditions so as to sustain growing urban populations while preserving natural resources. It can lead us to wonder how can we reduce pollution in cities? To answer the following question, we can take the case of London which is known to be high polluted. First I will present how the pollution in London can affects the life of people and then what measures the city wants to take to preserve the environment.

London is known to have a critical level of pollution. In fact, London’s pollution has reached a significant level of NO2 mainly caused by transport, energy production, industrial processes and construction. We know for a fact that the poor air quality contributes to many health problems such as lung defects, asthma, nausea and other issues that have become the everyday life of London citizens. Even the children are impacted by pollution with schools which are close to roads with illegal levels of NO2 pollution. The critical air pollution has contributed to more than 9 400 premature deaths and cost to the health care system £3.7 billion a year. The city has already faced a high pollution crisis in 1952 called “the great smog of London” because of chimney pots and caused more than 12000 deaths. London air quality is an alarming situation and risk the health of the citizens. For instance, an article from the Guardian in February 2017 showed that a student called Victoria Ware who came to London to study and start a PhD had her first asthma attack in 10 years because of the shocking air quality and she had to leave her studies and the city to avoid more health problems. We can say that the pollution in London became a health emergency and that the city must take measures and improve the situation.

In order to improve the air quality and to reduce pollution London is trying to turn the city into a green city. Turning the city into a countryside has many benefits for the environment such as improvement of air and water quality, filter pollutants, reduce the consumption of resources and the carbon emissions and last but not least it enables to preserve the biodiversity. The governments started several projects to achieve their goal, for instance they improved public transport to reduce congestion and pollution from road traffic. They also introduced green infrastructures that can help reduce pollution naturally, for example the "living walls", one tree can remove 26 pounds of carbon dioxide. Moreover, the mayor of London Sadiq Khan feels concerned about the pollution and its consequences. He is willing to improve the critic situation of the city. He intends to install an ultra-low emission zone in order to see the most polluting vehicles charged for entering the center of the capital from April 2019 and it will be extended to the North Circular and South Circular roads in 2021. He is developing an environment strategy for the city and with the participation of the citizens.

To conclude even though the city has reached a high level of pollution which can endanger the life of people, the
