IDEA OF PROGRESS

I’m going to talk about the « Idea of progress ». To begin with, I would like to state a definition of progress. Somebody think that our society can evolve positively in therms of sciences, technology, living condition, etc. The word progress designs any change which contributes to making the world a better place. However, concerning the sciences, progress still debates between those who consider that it is only beneficial and those for whom it is also harmful. Now, I suggest to think about this question : «In therms of science, should we fear progress ? »

On one hand, it's obvious that progress is essential to evolve. Indeed, history is made of progress and evolutions that have allowed the world to be what it is today. For example, thanks to advances in science, medicine has become much more efficient and accessible. To illustrate this, I can take the striking example of Sora, a Japan robot which is able to help surgeons to operate.

Nevertherless, on the other hand, progress also can be dangerous, for istance, if there is no control. In the film « Welcome to Gattaca », science and technology have led to a world without emotions, without values and whithout freedom. In addition to this, some people think we will create artificial intelligence and the future robots will want to make us slaves or to kill us. To take an other example, I also can talk about debates concerning to the question : « Should parents be able to choose their baby’s gender ? ». An article extracted from the Internet newspaper MailOnline take position against it. As far as they are concerned, "If you are not prepared to accept and parent either a boy or a girl, you should not be a parent".

So, as a conclusion, I would say that progress is neither all good or all bad. Put into the hands of human beings, knowledge could be used for medicine or great advances. Nonetheless, most of the time, science poses ethical problems therefore I answer you : Is humanity the only progress limit ?
